Shopify’s AI Orders Tripled. What It Means for Cloud Marketplaces

AI traffic to Shopify tripled YoY. AI-driven orders tripled too. And orders from new buyers through AI channels ran at ~2x the rate of other channels. This data is a preview of what's coming to cloud marketplaces, as agentic AI search and buying becoming a norm.

AI traffic to Shopify tripled YoY. AI-driven orders tripled too. And orders from new buyers through AI channels ran at ~2x the rate of other channels. This data is a preview of what's coming to cloud marketplaces, as agentic AI search and buying becoming a norm.

Shopify is a B2B commerce platform. In Q2 its revenue grew 34% and B2B GMV growth of 76%. AI remains small inside Shopify's $115.6B quarterly GMV. But 3X growth shows how fast buying habits are changing.

Shopify serves millions of merchants. It works with OpenAI, Google, Meta and Microsoft, while thousands of developers add its commerce tools to their own applications.

That makes this the clearest data yet of how AI works as a distribution channel.

AI is bringing in people who had not bought before

  • Traffic from AI channels: 3X YoY

  • Orders from AI channels: 3X YoY

  • First-time buyers among those orders: ~2x the rate of other channels

AI channels are finding customers who had not shown up anywhere else.

They behave as a customer-acquisition channel rather than a convenience layer for existing buyers.

The long tail products won

75% of AI-attributed orders came from outside Shopify's top 100 categories.

The single most counterintuitive number on the call. Keyword search rewards brand and popularity. Agents make multiple calls against structured data and match on specific intent.

Read-across: agentic procurement may favor the specialized ISV over the incumbent suite. That is the inverse of how marketplace browse and search have ranked products until now.

Structured first-party data beat scraped data 2:1 on conversion

Shopify spent nearly two years building Catalog — over a billion products, structured so AI agents can read them. AI searches through Catalog converted at twice the rate of searches working from scraped data.

Read-across: your AWS, Azure and Google Cloud listing metadata is your catalog. Most ISV listings are written for a human browsing a tile, not an agent parsing constraints.

Shopify's Q2 is the first hard evidence that agentic discovery redistributes demand toward specific, well-structured products, and that the structuring is the asset.

AI did not cannibalize search

Over the past two years, traditional search sessions on Shopify stores grew 1.3X. Search still delivers ~1/3 of all storefront visits and remains one of the largest sources of buyer traffic.

So AI channels 3X while search kept growing. The AI traffic is additional demand, not demand moved over from somewhere else.

What should Cloud GTM leaders do now?

  • Your marketplace listing now has two readers: a human who browses and an agent that parses. You have to serve both, and neither one is going away.

  • Rewrite cloud marketplace description, include product details and specific customer use cases

  • Ask your cloud partners how their AI will find, compare and recommend products

Open your marketplace listing. Could an AI agent tell which buyer problem you solve?
