What Salesforce is borrowing
Tyler Carlson, who leads AgentExchange product, told CRN after Dreamforce this month:
"Our aspiration with the AgentExchange is … to build a similar marketplace for a SaaS product like the hyperscalers have. And as customers pre-buy usage, commit to usage, there becomes this mechanism where our partners get access to this pre-committed budget."
The commercial link is between customer commitments and partner purchases.
On AWS, Azure and Google Cloud, eligible partner marketplace purchases count toward customer cloud commits. Salesforce wants a similar mechanism around its own platform.

Commit drawdown? Could be a future possibility
If it happens, the eligibility logic looks familiar. Carlson says partners 'building capabilities that drive usage or consumption of Salesforce platform' could potentially retire customer commitments. AWS and Azure apply similar tests: purchases count when they run on their cloud.
For scale, Salesforce holds $66B in customer commitments (RPO). If you apply the hyperscaler model to even part of it, the pool for partner products runs into billions. Still an if.
Why partner services are key in AI
In October, AgentExchange plans to open commerce to services and products that don't necessarily run on Salesforce. Its September marketplace terms already cover approved partner-hosted SaaS and services: implementation, managed support, etc.
Why push services? In a consumption model, customers burn and refill credits only once agents are built, deployed and running. That is services work.
It also gives Salesforce sellers a reason to co-sell. Salesforce's partner guidance links Agentforce consumption to seller incentives. Carlson's stated goal is "commerce synergy across our partner ecosystem and our direct sellers."
SIs could sell their software, implementation and support, billed through Salesforce. Adjacent SaaS vendors gain a new transaction channel without a native Salesforce app.
Where marketplaces are heading
Salesforce has rebuilt AgentExchange listings to make them discoverable by AI tools. Carlson wants buyers to find partners through Claude, ChatGPT or Google AI using marketplace data.
Next, he wants checkout through MCP servers, so agents can buy from within other interfaces.
Marketplaces are expanding beyond their storefronts. AWS exposes its catalog through APIs and MCP.
Microsoft's catalog integrates with channel marketplaces like TD SYNNEX's.
Carlson says it's 'not a stretch' for agents soon to research a purchase and complete it within an approved budget.
How long until that becomes the standard for marketplaces?
