Commvault CFO Names Hyperscaler Agreements a SaaS Margin Driver

Commvault's CFO just gave alliance leaders a rare P&L proof point. Hyperscaler agreements were among the drivers behind SaaS margins hitting 70.6%. Commvault, a cyber-resilience company, grew SaaS ARR 38% to $424M in Q1 FY27. That margin sits inside a broader cloud-alliance model: Microsoft is becoming a deeper product and distribution partner, and AWS helped deliver a multi-cloud win.

Commvault, a cyber-resilience company, grew SaaS ARR 38% to $424M in Q1 FY27. That margin sits inside a broader cloud-alliance model: Microsoft is becoming a deeper product and distribution partner, and AWS helped deliver a multi-cloud win.

Here is the breakdown.

Hyperscaler agreements are showing up in SaaS economics

SaaS gross margin reached 70.6%, up 6.35% YoY.

CFO Gary Merrill credited scale, product optimization, acquisition integration and "strategic agreements with our hyperscaler partners."

A public CFO put hyperscaler commercial terms in a margin explanation, next to product and M&A.

That is the cloud showing up in economics, not just in a pipeline.

Microsoft is becoming a deeper product and distribution partner

After a long partnership, Commvault is tightening engineering alignment with Microsoft. Its cyber resilience will run as a native ISV service inside Azure, and the company says it is "being more integrated into the marketplace."

CEO Sanjay Mirchandani: "It's easier for the customer to just be able to click and use AI-level resilience inside of the Microsoft cloud offerings."

The reason he gave for the whole ecosystem push:

The easier it is for customers to discover and use Commvault natively within the clouds where their data already resides, the faster platform adoption accelerates.

Discovery friction can constrain growth. Marketplace is one mechanism Commvault is using to reduce it.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) co-delivered the quarter's lead customer story

Commvault described a pre-IPO customer operating across Snowflake, S3 and Google Cloud. "In partnership with AWS," it delivered data security and access governance.
An AWS relationship helped win a major customer that extended well beyond AWS.

A Chief Partner Officer hire is now an investor conversation

Commvault hired Brian Lanigan as Chief Partner Officer. He brings 20+ years across cybersecurity and partner ecosystems — SentinelOne, Lacework, Splunk, HP Software.

An analyst asked about the hire on the earnings call - a telling signal that partner leadership is becoming a board/investor-level conversation.

Partnerships now directly drive product distribution and revenue.

Key lessons for alliance leaders:

  • Hyperscaler collaboration improve the economics

  • Native cloud and Marketplace integration reduce customer discovery friction and drive adoption

  • Joint delivery with the clouds drive major customer wins

Partner leadership turns those pieces into a repeatable growth driver.
