Microsoft Azure's cloud business continues its impressive ascent, growing 29% YoY in Q4, with ✨AI driving 8% of this growth. But is it enough to satisfy Wall Street's appetite for AI-driven success?
📊 Microsoft just released its Q4 results, showcasing a solid performance.
Microsoft Cloud quarterly revenue of $36.8 billion, up 21%.
Azure posted sales growth of 29% YoY, which fell just short of Wall Street's hopes for record-breaking 30-31% growth it showed last quarter.
This has created some pressure on the stock, though analysts like Kirk Materne from Evercore ISI noted there was nothing that represents a 'thesis breaker'" as there were numerous positive signals.
🎯 AI: The New Cloud Catalyst
The real story? AI's growing impact on cloud adoption. Microsoft CFO @Amy Hood revealed that AI contributed 8 percentage points to Azure's growth this quarter, up from 7 points last quarter and 6 the quarter before.
This steady increase signals a clear trajectory: AI is becoming a major driver of cloud adoption and revenue.
Hood also shared on Microsoft's earnings call that the demand for AI services again outstripped capacity.
🛠️ Infrastructure Investments Ramping Up
"To meet the growing demand signal for our AI and cloud products, we will scale our infrastructure investments," Hood said on the company's earnings call. Consequently, Microsoft projects an increase in capital expenditures in its new fiscal year relative to what it spent in the one that just finished.
Growth Moderation on the Higher Revenue Base
The company also forecast for its Azure cloud-computing business growth to moderate slightly in the coming quarter to 28% (29% growth in constant currency). Growth moderation is generally natural, as growing on an ever-larger base revenue base is much more challenging.
💡 CEO Satya Nadella summed it up, while underscoring the company's core strength as a platform:
“As a platform company, we are focused on meeting the mission-critical needs of our customers across our at-scale platforms today, while also ensuring we lead the AI era.”
Azure's nearly 30% growth trajectory, bolstered by AI, positions it very strongly in the competitive cloud market.
